Using correlative microscopy, we identified the key constituents from a dinosaur fossil rib bone and its hosting mudstone. Our results revealed that illite and calcite were the key overlapping. The histology of cervical ribs of sauropoda reveals a primary bone tissue, which largely consists of longitudinally oriented mineralized collagen fibres, essentially the same. Data from this study suggest a progression from a dorsally rigid, heterogeneously partitioned, multichambered lung in basal dinosauriform archosaurs towards the small entirely rigid avian. We present the histological and taphonomic analysis of a dinosaur dorsal rib fragment from the marlia formation in the western state of minas gerais.
